Prints are now available to buy from the print on demand service of Society6!

T-Shirts and iPhone cases are also available on certain pieces.

Initially just the portraits I’ve been working on of late, but I’ll add more stuff soon when I’ve formatted everything correctly.

Hitchcock T-Shirt.

Haven’t posted in a while. Turns out trying to create work and imagery around a full time job isn’t as easy as it sounds, especially when you have to stare at a mac screen for 10 hours a day in a room with no windows. Eyes start to hurt.

So I thought I’d try and see how I can get my existing work out there in different ways, trying out different print companies for different things. Got a parcel this morning with this t shirt and some postcards.

My new month’s resolution is to actually get back to drawing/grow some semblance of facial hair for Movember. Hopefully one of those will succeed, so here’s also a very sneaky peek of the beginning stages of a project I’ve started this week.

Bonus points if you can guess what it is!

Hopefully blogging about it will pressure me into finishing it soon!

Alfred Hitchcock prints

1 A2 to go up in my degree show, and some A3 ones to go on sale in a limited run. Printed on lovely 310gsm etching paper. After much stress, things are finally starting to turnaround and look like they’re on the right track. I do hope I haven’t jinxed it now.
Our university’s Degree Show begins on the 26th June - more details soon, but I do urge anyone in the Norwich area to come along - some really talented people showing off their hardwork. It’s going to be grand.

Pretty much final?

Certainly hope so, I want to get them printed tomorrow.

University project - posters/book covers about Film Directors.

Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock and the Coen Brothers.

Using elements from their films to create their portraits.

I don’t often say this about my work, but I’m quite happy how these have turned out. I could constantly tweak little bits endlessly, but for now I think I should stop fiddling… unless anyone points out any glaring things which don’t work!

Changed the back cover of the Hitchcock one, it now features the Bates Motel as opposed to the plughole, which gave the cover a weird perspective change, and didn’t really look like a plughole.

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

WIP of my Alfred Hitchcock Poster thing.
Sorry if people are getting sick of looking at this now.
It’s getting to the tiny detail tweaking stage, as I want to send this to print at some point very soon hopefully. I’ve edited some of the faces, and recoloured bits, looking mostly at the lifeboat area, as that was bothering me.

Can I ask for everyone’s advice? Are there any details at all which bother you? Doesn’t matter how nitpicky it is, not matter how small the detail - it’s going to be a fairly big print, so if it looks dodgy small, it’ll look horrendous big. If you wouldn’t mind taking a quick look, I’d very much appreciate it - I’ve been staring at it way too long, so can’t really see a lot of the little bits that are wrong. Fresh outlooks would be fantastic.

Thanks! :)

This will still hopefully be applied as a book cover later, but I’m still playing with type at the moment.

Bit of progress. Wanted to see how it might look with the back cover and a bit of text on it.
Still bits missing from the composition at various points, but I think I want to wait to see what tutors think before I do all the tiny extra bits. The plughole is bothering me, not sure if it works - any feedback would be great.
(It’s supposed to be like the plughole from Psycho and the blood red going into it…)
Typefaces not final, I’m not a Graphic Designer, so I know that’s a weak point - good thing I live with one that doesn’t mind helping me at times :)

I also wanted to try to see what it might look like as a wrap around cover - failed at using the perspective tool on Photoshop….

Let me know what you think? Thanks :)

Hitchcock on Hitchcock.
WIP - continuing the book cover project for uni work, on film directors. I’ve done a little more today, focusing on the grey within his suit.
Need to sort out what’s going on within his head, after I erased a lot of the bad likenesses. Getting the right tones in there might be tricky too.
But for now, I need a break from Photoshop, my eyes hurt.
Any feedback would be most welcome. I still need to sort out the line work in this too - the ugly thick ones will be the first to go when I get onto that stage.
Really hope the tutors don’t hate it!
Cheers

EDIT: Still needs more birds

Further WIP on Hitchcock.
EDIT: Needs more birds.
Reworked a few likenesses/got rid of the bad bits within his head - need to work out what to put in there instead. Starting to look ok?
Need a bit of a break from the screen I think.
Thank you for the feedback on this morning’s upload, I’m sorry I don’t know how to properly reply on tumblr.

WIP Alfred Hitchcock Help? Advice? Feedback needed Unfinished Vector Illustration

WIP on Hitchcock cover.
Started trying to add colour, push forward the Hitchcock cover I’ve been working at. Not sure if this is a good idea, so I’m hoping I might get some feedback by uploading this.
I tried colouring it with various preset brushes to make it look like it was hand made, but it looked too messy, as there’s so much going on in the drawings. So I decided I wanted to simplify it and vector it - linking the colour and shapes back to posters for Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
The red around the head and shoulders of Hitchcock will go round the cover and spine, onto the back, where there’ll be a plug hole from Psycho, so it’s like blood really.
In short, that’s my reasoning behind doing this - I would very much appreciate any feedback, positive or negative - would like to know if it’s working or not. If you do have a few seconds spare, please could you let me know what you think?Thank you! (I’m thinking of rubbing out some of the lines, maybe let the blocks of colour define some of the forms? In a similar way to what I did with one of my Unit 7 projects (hopefully I’ll get it right this time, though!!) That ugly black line defining Hitchcock’s head certainly won’t be there in the final thing!)

Still an awful long way to go, but hopefully his features are starting to emerge.
Trying to make his face out of bits from his films.
Idea for one of a series of book covers for biographies/books of film directors. First up is Alfred Hitchcock. Work in Progress.

Alfred Hitchcock - Sketches of likeness.

One of my uni projects this term is to do a series of book jackets for biographies/books about film directors. I want to produce a minimum of 3, at the moment looking at Hitchcock, then hope to be able to do others for Cronenberg, the Coen brothers, etc. There are a whole list of names I’d like to get through, but I always set myself too much to do, so I’m trying to be realistic this time round.
I wanted to link my projects this time, as last Unit saw 2 wildly different projects (monoprint extracts and a disappointing colour graphic novel which didn’t turn out how I wanted), and the tutors think I need a bit more consistency within my projects. So, as I’m hoping to do the D&AD Little White Lies project, I thought of doing another film related project, which could then be applied to book jackets/point of sale posters.
They’d be portrait based, but then have images from the films within the faces… kind of like how my Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has Gary Oldman’s face with other characters within it. Quite hard to explain what I mean, but I have an idea in my head. Need to get cracking really.
Anyway, this page is just some drawings trying to get the likeness right before I begin painting, but as usual, eyes/noses/mouths/basically everything is all a bit off. D’oh. Back to the drawing board.
