Screen Print

Making *slight* progress with my boxing images project.

Think it’s fair to say I’d lost my way completely with this project. Must’ve had 12 different tutors/guest tutors/visiting illustrators suggest different ways of working/saying they didn’t like different approaches I had been doing. Really didn’t know who to go with, and it left me not knowing what I wanted to do, and I kinda lost sight of what I’d originally intended.

The other day I wanted to screen print a large version of my Drive D&AD entry in preparation for our end of year show, but there’d been a mixup with the printers, and the technician had printed off someone else’s work on my acetate. Seeing as I didn’t have anything with me that day as I’d wanted to screen print, I decided to chuck together some of the drawings I had on my desk, and this booklet type thing was born. I hadn’t originally intended to make a narrative or a sequential thing at all, but all the separate elements I had sort of made a mini story of a fight, I guess.

It got some positive feedback from a couple of tutors, which was surprising, but I’m just glad that I may have found a resolution for this project. It’s not what I originally had in mind, but if it works, I’ll go with it. Really disappointed it’s taken me this long, and got so close to hand in to figure this out, I really should’ve planned it better.

These are my initial pages. Lots of rough drawings and some pages don’t work, so hopefully I can redo them tonight and screen print again at some point this week!

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! What pages don’t work? What kinda do?

Cheers

Work in Progress images for a sequence based on a short story by Ethan Coen called ‘Destiny’

This project has changed quit a bit from what I originally intended - At first, I wanted to do a set of images of ‘in the ring’ events, and then a set of images based on all the stuff that happens outside. I wanted them to reflect each other, in a way. But then after many, many, many different tutorials and trying to explain the project again and again to different people who don’t know the story, I thought it perhaps best to stick to the in-ring bits. That, and the in-ring bits are more fun to draw, seem a bit more striking? This way, if they’re to be shown in our end of year show, hopefully the audience will understand/get what’s going on more than what they would if they saw images of motels and a man with a tube up his nose.

Now I’m trying to work out compositions and sizes, as well as a sequence. Before, all my images were just in square boxes - trying to vary it more now, with different box sizes. A few suggestions I’ve received from tutors were to make them be a series of panels. Not sure how I feel about that, as I wasn’t looking to do a graphic novel per se. But, here’s a look at how the images could interact with each other. Any feedback would be terrific. This project has given me such a headache, talking to so many different tutors and having so many conflicting ideas (I know they’re supposed to give different viewpoints, but none of them have agreed with each other), that I feel I’ve done 10 rounds myself!

These are roughs, to work out compositions and sizing etc. Really need to get a move on!

"Do I, Irv? Do I have it in me?"

Whew, haven’t monoprinted for a while. Very rusty. This could take a while.
Excuse the camera pic, just did this and it’s still tacky. Gonna have quite a few more goes at this, that hand went badly, very badly.
This is for my Extracts project - had a crit with a tutor and it seems like monoprint could lend itself to the grunge-y grubby, dirty and beaten up feel of the short story by Ethan Coen.

I’ve entered a design competition on Talenthouse - to design a shirt for my favourite band Our Lady Peace. I’ve been a fan for over half my life, and to have one of my pictures possibly as a T Shirt would be a bit of a dream come true!

Studies of Boxers 2

Pencil sketches and figure studies for university project to do extracts for ‘Destiny’ by Ethan Coen, from his book ‘Gates of Eden’.

Need to practice my figure drawing before I take the project further - don’t want to rush into it and be let down by unresolved figures like last unit. Still trying to work out rough compositions in my head. For now, I’ll just keep trying to get these kind of things right.

Studies of Boxers.

For one of my university projects I want to look at illustrating a short story by Ethan Coen, from his book ‘Gates of Eden’.

The two stories which I enjoyed most were ‘Destiny’ and ‘A Fever in the Blood’, so I’d like to try out images for one/both of these.

'Destiny' is about a rubbish boxer that gets into a lot of debt and has to do some unsavoury jobs, so I've just started sketching images of old boxers. I wanted to go down a 1950s ish era of boxing route. That way I can watch OLP's Heavyweight music video a lot for inspiration. It also gives me a chance to improve my figure drawings, which aren't that great, let's be honest. I don't want to make the same mistake I made with last unit's Graphic Novel, so I'm starting off slowly, getting pencils down first, before moving onto the actual art.

Alone in the uni studio at the moment, should probably leave before the caretakers throw me out.

Pencil sketches, work in progress.
